Earthquakes

Watch this video to find out more about earthquakes:

Earthquakes are the sudden shaking of the earth's surface and usually last less than a minute. They are caused by two parts of the Earth's surface pushing against each other with great force, causing the surface to break. When the surface breaks, we feel this as an earthquake. We do not yet have a way of knowing when earthquakes are going to come , however scientists are working on finding one!

How do earthquakes affect shelters?

- Houses and other buildings may crumble

- Bridges can break

- Roads often split

- Transport and communication links might be disrupted

- Water pipes could burst and water supplies become contaminated or dirty

- Landslides and tsunamis may occur which disrupt natural shelters and built shelters

- It costs a lot of money to rebuild a city after an earthquake has caused a lot of damage
